It’s the 21st Century and I still find the treatment of women appalling. Feeling good about what women have accomplished? Think you are finally being taken seriously? Here are some stories to remind you that the work for equality never sleeps:

Wikileaks SHOCKER: No one CARES about Women

Myths on virginity and the pressure to be one
“With the current advances in medical technology, a plastic surgeon can quite easily reconstruct a layer of tissue to resemble the hymen (called hymenoplasty).”

“Clerics argue that sports are absolutely off limits only for virgins, who could become unmarriageable if they were to damage their hymens through athletic activity.”

Women are not discriminated against
“I don’t think women, Asians and Hispanics should be able to use that title. That’s why our numbers cannot improve, because we use women, Asians and Hispanics, who are not people of color, who are not people who have been discriminated against.” Illinois State Senator James Meeks.

You have no education, you get a crappy salary, you live in a hovel and you’re FAT
“Women who are better educated and live in households that are middle-income or above are less likely to be obese than women who are less educated and live in the lowest income households, new government research shows” – USA Today

Tenured women professors say process is more difficult than for white male profs
“Results suggest that the perceptions of female tenured faculty members and tenured faculty of color differ significantly from those of their white male counterparts. Both female professors and professors of color perceived the tenure process as less fair and more difficult than did male or white professors.”

USA failing moms, daughters, sisters, girlfriends, wives, grandmothers when it comes to health
“The United States has failed to reach almost every goal set for women’s health, a new report says. In fact, no state was given a overall satisfactory grade for women’s health and only two states, Vermont and Massachusetts, got the next highest grade of “satisfactory minus.” Thirty-seven states received an unsatisfactory grade, and 12 were given an F.”

More women getting college degrees, higher test scores, but still no board positions ore equal pay
“Women saw little advancement in pay and corporate boardrooms in 2010, extending a trend in which companies have lagged in promoting women, a study released on Monday shows.”
