Today, North Carolina became the 30th state to approve a constitutional amendment “defining marriage solely as a union between a man and a woman.” What disappoints me so much is that a woman, Tami Fitzgerald, heads up the group that pushed for the amendment. She told the Washington Post, “I think it sends a message to the rest of the country that marriage is between one man and one woman. The whole point is simply that you don’t rewrite the nature of God’s design based on the demands of a group of adults.”
Thirty states got enough people to vote on a constitutional amendment telling two consenting adults that they cannot marry. It appears the only thing that many voters can agree on and yet, passing this amendment and adding it to our U.S. Constitution will do absolutely nothing to fix our country. Nothing.
Jeremy Kennedy of the group Protect All NC Families stated, “I am happy to say that we are stronger for it; we are better for it; our voices are louder now,” said Jeremy Kennedy of Protect All NC Families. “We have courage like we never had before, and we have strength to continue on.”
I am going to throw up. Words like “we are stronger for it; we are better for it; we have courage like never before…” should mean something. People should get stronger and have victories for things like preventing child abuse, insuring that children are fed, protecting the young lives that live in American war zones daily where gang violence is so prevalent, that a simple walk to school to be educated can end a child’s life. We should be “happy and stronger” when the most vulnerable in our society gains some peace. Millions of people in America have risen up to stop gay men and women from getting married. Why? Because they want to protect the family and protect the sanctity of marriage, a sanctity that is dissolved annually by 50 percent of man/woman unions.
Families are under attack. They are being targeted daily by high unemployment, drug abuse, alcohol, rising debt, lack of funds, high gas prices, an education system that is turning out dumb kids, jobs are leaving the U.S., the elderly can’t pay for heat or air conditioning. What will stopping gay marriage do for these families?
Millions of dollars has been spent on both sides trying to affect the outcome of this amendment, but it won’t make any difference because ONLY 10 PERCENT OF THE U.S. POPULATION IS GAY! Who do you think will win this, the 10 percent or the 90 percent.
The more important question is what will it change. How will adding to our U.S. Constitution that marriage is between a man and a woman make the lives of Americans better.
